Growing up I struggled with finding an interest for reading, the words never formed stories and instead of flipping pages I would just stare at the book. So my Mother took it upon herself to fix that through hours of practice with reading and candy as a reward. I started to enjoy reading and soon enough I was seeking stories on my own. Looking back I can connect a lot of positive changes to my interest in reading such as my confidence in school, my academics and my ability to express myself effectively. I saw the same issues with my cousins and kids in my school, where reading felt like a chore. So when an opportunity came to me, an opportunity that asked students in high school to submit ideas that could make a positive impact I knew exactly what I would do. I planned to create a reading app for kids however this app would be different as it would use the voices of preexisting tv characters from popular kids shows, most of which were very frequent in my childhood, to help kids build a good relationship early on.
After some brainstorming and summarizing I submitted my idea to the Foundation, and shortly after was accepted. It was there that I did research, made wireframes, coded and designed a demo of StoryPals. The demo focused on Kindergarten students as a strong base in kids education makes everything else that's new easier.
The process was difficult as I had no experience or skills. Throughout the process I had many doubts but by presentation day, I was able to show the work I had done on my own and how I made my idea come to life.
Below I have attached a design of the app and a video of how it works.
